Duolingo’s Restaurant Side Business Tops $1.3M

In June of 2022, Duolingo opened a Mexican restaurant called Duo’s Taquería in Pittsburgh, PA, where Duolingo’s headquarters are located. On Google Maps, it has ~300 reviews and is rated 4.7 stars.

While analyzing Duolingo’s financial documents, I found something interesting. According to their 10-K filing, Duolingo operates a taquería (taco restaurant) that saw dramatic revenue growth last year.

The 2023 10-K states plainly: “Other revenue is mainly comprised of revenue from Duo’s Taquería.”

Let’s look at the numbers:

  • 2022: $625 thousand
  • 2023: $682 thousand
  • 2024: $1.293 million

In 2024, there was no disclaimer about the “other” revenue. But we can safely assume that it’s related to the restaurant. This categorization did not exist in the 2022 10-K, but was only broken out in the 2023 10-K.

In their financial reports, Duolingo breaks out their revenue in the following categories: Subscription, Advertising, In-App Purchases, Duolingo English Test, and Other.

A chart showing Duolingo’s quarterly revenue growth from 2020 to 2024. Revenue steadily increased, reaching $209.6M in Q4 2024. Annual revenue milestones: $250.8M in 2021, $369.5M in 2022, $531M in 2023, and $748M in 2024. The trend reflects consistent growth alongside rising user numbers

This revenue is small compared to Duolingo’s 2024 total revenue of $748 million, but I thought that users of the popular language learning app might find it interesting.
